ULTRASONIC WAVES IN HETEROGENEOUS MATERIALS - MECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF HETEROGENEOUS MATERIALS BY MEANS OF ULTRASONIC TESTS AND NUMERICAL MODEL…

2014

This Ph.D thesis treats the propagation of ultrasonic waves in heterogeneous materials. It is widely known how waves propagate in homogeneous materials like metallic ones. But very few aspects are known about the propagation in the heterogeneous materials because of the complex behavior regarding these materials. The heterogeneity can be related with the intrinsic properties, elastic and chemical, of each phase of the material, or with the periodic or random arrangement of inclusions of constant or different shapes. Concrete is a common case. In this work the first chapter gives a description of the main characteristics of heterogeneous materials.. In the second one, the methods of inspecti…

The interphase finite element

2011

Mesomodelling of structures made of heterogeneous materials requires the introduction of mechanical models which are able to simulate the interactions between the adherents. Among these devices is quite popular the zero thickness interface (ZTI) model where the contact tractions and the displacement discontinuities are the primary static and kinematic variables. In some cases the joint response depends also on the internal stresses and strains within the thin layer adjacent to the joint interfaces. The interphase model, taking into account these additional variables, represents a sort of enhanced ZTI. In this paper a general theoretical formulation of the interphase model is reported and an…

A Two-Stage Reconstruction of Microstructures with Arbitrarily Shaped Inclusions

2020

The main goal of our research is to develop an effective method with a wide range of applications for the statistical reconstruction of heterogeneous microstructures with compact inclusions of any shape, such as highly irregular grains. The devised approach uses multi-scale extended entropic descriptors (ED) that quantify the degree of spatial non-uniformity of configurations of finite-sized objects. This technique is an innovative development of previously elaborated entropy methods for statistical reconstruction. Here, we discuss the two-dimensional case, but this method can be generalized into three dimensions. At the first stage, the developed procedure creates a set of black synthetic …
